Air New Zealand abandons its goal to reach zero carbon emissions by 2030 | Air Travel

Air New Zealand has announced that it is scrapping its 2030 carbon emissions targets due to the lack of availability of newer fuel-efficient aircraft and alternative jet fuels. Chief Executive Greg Foran stated that potential delays in the airline’s fleet renewal plan could hinder the target’s achievability. As a result, the airline has withdrawn from the Science Based Targets Initiative network and is considering a new near-term carbon emissions reduction target that better reflects industry challenges.

Despite this setback, Air New Zealand remains committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Chair Therese Walsh emphasized the airline’s ongoing efforts to transition away from fossil fuels and its advocacy for regulatory and policy changes to mitigate climate change risks. The airline had initially aimed to reduce overall carbon emissions by 16.3 percent by 2030, compared to a 2019 baseline.

The decision to retract its 2030 targets comes at a time when airlines are facing increased demand for emissions-generating fuel due to longer routes forced by conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. Air New Zealand’s challenges highlight the broader industry struggles in meeting sustainability goals amid global supply chain issues.
