In a move to improve voter lists and maintain accurate registration rolls, nearly 8% of Nevada’s active registered voters are receiving a postcard from election officials that they must return by August 6th. Failure to do so will result in being moved to an “inactive” status and not automatically receiving a ballot for the upcoming presidential election. The initiative follows the National Voter Registration Act and aims to ensure eligible voters have access to the ballot.
The postcards were sent to over 150,000 voters who had official election mail returned as undeliverable during previous elections and did not update their voter record. Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar announced the initiative as part of a transition to a state-led Voter Registration and Election Management System to increase the speed and accuracy of maintaining voter rolls.
Some conservative groups, including the Republican National Committee, have challenged voter registration data in Nevada and across the country. Former President Donald Trump has made unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud, adding to the tension surrounding voter registration efforts.
In Washoe County, one commissioner’s use of voter rolls as a reason to vote against certifying election results caused legal challenges before being overturned. While some groups see challenges to voter rolls as necessary for election integrity, others view it as an attempt to undermine confidence in election results leading up to the 2024 election.
