Italy’s Path of Love, considered the most romantic walk in the world, reopens after over ten years

Local authorities in Cinque Terre, Italy are thrilled to announce the reopening of the iconic Via dell’Amore, also known as the ‘Path of Love’. The 1km long route, offering stunning coastal views, closed in 2012 due to a landslide incident. After extensive renovations, the pathway is scheduled to fully reopen on 27 July 2024.

The Via dell’Amore is a key part of the Cinque Terre UNESCO World Heritage Site, connecting the villages of Riomaggiore and Manarola. It was initially constructed to provide a passage for railway workers between the two towns, eventually becoming a romantic meeting spot for lovers. The restoration project includes steel mesh reinforcements to prevent landslides, as well as a monitoring system for safety.

To tackle issues of overtourism in the region, authorities have introduced a booking system for visitors looking to walk the pathway. A limit of 400 visitors per hour has been set, with tickets available online or at designated ticket booths. In addition, fines have been imposed for disruptive behavior, such as blocking traffic or pedestrians for selfies.

The Via dell’Amore is part of the Sentiero Azzuro, a popular hiking trail that connects all five villages of Cinque Terre. The entire Blue Path is approximately 12 kilometers long and offers a picturesque trek through the coastal landscape. Visitors can purchase a Cinque Terre Trekking Card for access to the trails and facilities within the national park, as well as options for unlimited train travel in the region.

As Cinque Terre prepares for the reopening of the beloved ‘Path of Love’, tourists are encouraged to embrace responsible tourism practices and enjoy the breathtaking scenery while preserving the natural beauty of the area.
